Listfishing: How to Decipher Vague Home Descriptions
Home BuyerWhether it is your first or fifth time buying a house, one of the hardest parts is combing through the active listings to find the homes that meet your needs enough to make you actually want to see them in person. There is nothing worse than stepping into a house only to realize you have been catfished —or what we like to call “listfished”— by overly generous photography, editing, and an enticing listing description.
We’ve crafted a list of common listing terms and what they “might” actually mean without the rose colored filter.
Don’t get listfished again.
COMMON LISTING TERMS | WHAT THEY "ACTUALLY" MEAN... |
---|---|
Well cared for home | Hasn’t been updated in 30 years, but big stuff is taken care of |
Hidden gem | Decent, but overpriced |
Sold As Is | There’s definitely a list of things wrong, and we won’t fix them |
Needs a little TLC | Get ready for a big renovation |
Handyman Special | Put money in a pile and light it on fire |
Diamond in the rough | Hot mess express |
Charm and Character | Small, slightly outdated but clean |
Easy access to highway/interstate | Right near the highway so expect to hear the traffic |
So much potential | Lots of projects |
Low maintenance backyard | Spots of grass, a lot of dirt |
Ready to make your own | Get out your checkbook and be patient |
Centrally located | Close to nothing and everything at the same time |
This one won’t last | We’ve overpriced it!/td> |
Bring your creativity | Someone went a bit off the rails and we’re hoping it’s not too crazy to dissuade someone else from buying it. |
In the future, you can review those write-ups and have a better understanding of what the home offers.
Know before you go!
